Meet Mark Haver

From a very young age, Mark Haver knew that he wanted to dedicate his life to protecting our beautiful planet. He graduated from Florida Southern College with an undergraduate degree (B.S.) in May 2020, majoring in Environmental Studies, Marine Biology, Political Science, and Political Communication.

During college, he became involved with Sustainable Ocean Alliance, which would be a formative part of his professional development and advocacy work. Mark was actively involved in ocean and climate organizations, but he was a prominent member of the local, state, and national Democratic Party.

Upon graduation, Mark worked as a Field Organizer for the Florida Democratic Party in Polk County, where he worked the battleground of the battlegrounds in central Florida for the hotly contested Biden-Trump 2020 election. Mark played a leadership role in unionizing the Florida Democratic Party.

Following the election of President Joe Biden, Mark moved to Washington, DC, where he was hired as part of the ESP Advisors, a boutique government and public affairs firm for ocean and environmental clients. Joining a start-up consulting firm, along with the mentorship of ESP Advisor’s Founder Emily Patrolia, inspired Mark to create his own consulting firm, with his mission focused on campaigning for ocean and climate and supercharging the movement for sustainable policy change.

Sustainable Ocean Alliance from 2019 through 2025

Mark was deeply involved in SOA, first as a volunteer. With the SOA team, Mark devised SOA’s inaugural youth policy program, the Youth Policy Advisory Council (YPAC).

YPAC led two campaigns, the Global Blue New Deal and the Campaign Against Seabed Mining.

  • The Global Blue New Deal was featured by the UN High Level Climate Champions as a Solution under Race to Zero ahead of COP26
  • YPAC led a digital campaign, supporting the passage of Motion 069 at the 2021 IUCN World Conservation Congress, which called for a moratorium on deep-sea mining

In 2022, Mark joined SOA’s team as staff as their North America Regional Representative and Policy Advisor. Mark is very thankful for the opportunity to grow and strengthen the network of young ocean leaders in the U.S. and Canada while also devising campaigns and creating pathways for young people to campaign for ocean health.

  • Organized a youth-led campaign in support of SB2575 in Hawai’i, which passed successfully in 2024 and called for a deep-sea mining moratorium in state waters
  • Led a 150-person protest and digital activation against deep-sea mining in Vancouver, Canada to pressure the Canadian Government during the 5th International Marine Protected Areas Congress. One week later, Canada adopted a national position against deep-sea mining
  • Managed delegations of young ocean leaders to UNFCCC COP26, COP27, COP28, COP29, and COP30, Our Ocean 2023 and 2024, UN Ocean Conference 2022 and 2025, and Capitol Hill Ocean Week 2024 and 2025
